Our S.T.E.M. Journey

Principal SewellWhen I joined the Cooke team, I noticed a strong staff and a committed cluster of Detroit students.  I saw teachers working together to provide our students the best educational experiences, despite their limited resources.

Understanding that our students live in a world with a litany of Technology and Science, we realized it was essential for our style of teaching to adapt to the way they internalize information.  The process began with initial meetings with teachers, parents, members of the community, local politicians, and other stakeholders.

Through our collaborations, we came to believe that we must re-create our school with the image of our students’ futures.  We started with the basic question: What types of professions and businesses will our students lead in our global world? We began to brainstorm, sharing careers ranging from engineers to mathematicians all the way to the President of the United States of America.

During this exploratory time, the suggestion of S.T.E.M. surfaced sparking a common interest in all stakeholders. Once the concept was set in motion, the teachers emphasized that they wanted a true S.T.E.M. program with meaningful applications of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

The fruits of our collaboration and labor has metamorphosed into the new Cooke S.T.E.M. Academy.  We have added an Instructional Technology Specialist to our team, and we are collectively working to provide hands on science lab experiences, S.T.E.M. based projects, effective integration of technology, and career exposure.  Our S.T.E.M. journey is an evolving process, but we are committed to providing the necessary curriculum that will adequately prepare our students to blossom into tomorrow’s leaders.
